I love a nice handwritten card. In this digital age when a text or voxer message is the norm, it’s extra special when someone takes the time to write a note. I’m also a sucker for cute cards. I’ve been known to spend 20 minutes in the card aisle at Target searching for the perfect birthday card or just looking at all the pretty stationary!
With Mother’s Day and Father’s Day quickly approaching, I’m stocking up on cards for family and loved ones. What better way to show you care than with a handwritten note?

Local artist and illustrator Laura Palmer is a lifelong Iowan who values a philanthropic spirit, the U.S. Postal Service, and a thoughtfully handwritten note. Laura started XO-LP in 2009 producing illustrations made with markers and wit. In 2014, she went from full-time fundraiser to full-time illustrator, a dream she’s had since creating her first hand-made greeting card in 1988.
In the past few years, Laura worked on over 300 custom illustration projects including: baby announcements, watercolor paintings of personal landmarks, illustrations that appeared in Midwest Living and Better Homes and Gardens Magazines, a Rogue jump box that Carrie Underwood owns, a 30-foot sharpie mural at the Outlets of Des Moines, her own wedding invitations, and a photo backdrop Annette Bening called “beautiful”.
When she’s not drawing, Laura spends time traveling and fly fishing with her well-dressed husband, FaceTiming with her nephew, and enjoying all the sites in her favorite city, Des Moines.
Laura loves working on projects for kids! She has done custom birthday party invitations, baby announcements, and coloring pages for parties. Her illustrations have a simple, whimsical style that particularly appeals to kids (or the kid-at-heart) making her drawings a great addition to any event.
