What’s On Your Des Moines Bucket List?

des moines bucket listI visited the Living History Farms for a field trip in fourth grade. I still remember buying rock candy in the general store. My grandparents lived just up the road in Waukee. I told them about the trip and they said, “You know, we’ve never been… and it’s right up the road.”

That story stuck with me. I made a mental note to never take for granted something that’s right there. When I travel and visit new places I do extensive research on places to eat and visit – and I ask locals what they think I should do.

What do you tell visitors to do when they visit Des Moines? We often suggest they eat at Zombie Burger, visit the Pappajohn Sculpture Park, and if the time of year is right to explore the downtown farmer’s market.

Things to do in Des Moines

I asked friends (transplants and natives) what they would add to their “Des Moines Bucket List,” specifically for those who have lived here a while.

Tour the Iowa Capitol Building

I have done this multiple times and each time I see it from a different perspective. As a child, I loved the dolls. As a photo editor in college, I admired its beauty. Now, as an active citizen, I see the people hard at work for our state. If you have ever been, go back. Plan your visit now (tours are free!).

RAGBRAI

I have not done a full week – and you don’t need to either! My husband and I did a day when it passed through Des Moines and it was a memorable experience. The overnight stops for the next race will be announced in late January 2022. In the meantime, you can get more information, including how to start training, on RABRAI’s website

Heritage Carousel at Union Park

This has been on my list for so long! I vow to go before the end of the year and tagging it #DSMUSA for proof to all of you. The carousel boasts only being $0.50 a ride, which is subsidized by donations, sponsorships, and private rentals. Plan your visit and learn more here

Whatever is on your Des Moines Bucket List, make it official. Write it down, set a date goal, and cross off your top items!
