Raising a big family while working full time requires some creativity in terms of household management. One area of my life that I have completely streamlined is grocery shopping, thanks in large part to my local Walmart Supercenter.
Walmart Supercenters are conveniently located everywhere. I mean, the real question should be where isn’t Walmart located? Des Moines has two stores. Additionally, there are locations in Ankeny, Altoona, Indianola, West Des Moines, and one right in my backyard here in Grimes.
Walmart is known for low prices, gigantic selection, and more recently their online grocery ordering and free grocery pickup.
Why I Shop at Walmart
Online ordering and grocery pickup have changed my life for the better.
I save precious hours each week using this free service. On Friday nights I access the Walmart grocery app on my smartphone to place my online order. Because the app remembers my previous purchases, this process is painless and usually requires only a few simple tweaks from week to week.
Once I place my order I can schedule a convenient pickup time and even add forgotten items for several hours after I submit my order. As long as I spend over thirty dollars on groceries I can enjoy free pickup. The minimum price is clearly no problem for my hungry brood, and I like that I can easily add diapers, wipes, makeup, and cleaning supplies to further streamline my domestic life.
Occasionally, the store employees have to substitute items I have ordered with similar products for a variety of reasons. In my experience, this has been a rare event, and I have the option of declining the substitution if it doesn’t fit my needs. The produce selections have been spot on and my only real complaint is how few items they put in each bag.
Milk is my family’s drink of choice and I order no fewer than four and a half gallons a week. We like the taste of Walmart’s Great Value milk and the price is consistently affordable. Thankfully the Grimes Walmart Supercenter also carries Anderson Erickson Dairy whole chocolate milk.
When my oldest son was on treatment for a rare form of pediatric cancer AE chocolate milk was the only liquid we could get him to drink. He is in remission now but I still allow him this daily treat to keep his weight up.
I don’t have time to clip coupons or to shop the sales ads at grocery stores. I need low prices on a regular basis. I can’t help but feel pampered as a dedicated Walmart employee fills the back of my minivan with the groceries I picked out the night before in the comfort of my own home. Online ordering helps me avoid impulse buys and encourages me to stick to my budget and weekly meal plan.
Why I Recommend Shopping at Walmart
If you are busy and on a budget, I encourage you to give Walmart Grocery a try. I promise you won’t miss the long lines on weekends and you will find a million more enjoyable ways to fill the time you once spent cruising up and down grocery aisles.
