I love it so much that I’ve made a side hustle out of it, and buy over half of everything for my family from thrift stores. I love spreading the wealth of knowledge so I have highlighted my favorite stores, tips for each store, and examples of what I have found at each.
Best Thrift Stores in Des Moines
Stuff Etc.
This consignment store has locations in both Clive and Ankeny and sells everything from clothing and bags to large furniture and books. I like to bring my items here to sell so I can shop on my credits. The receiving department sifts through items to make sure only quality pieces hit the sales floor. Also, the place is HUGE!
Tip: After 60 days, items go half off which gives you the chance to dig for some gems.
What I’ve found: Clothing for my entire family, books, handbags, gifts, and even our kitchen table and chairs.

Animal Lifeline of Iowa Thrift Store
I love supporting this hidden gem because proceeds benefit the animals at the special needs no-kill shelter Animal Lifeline. I also love this store because I can find gorgeous vintage items and newer design items – there is a bit of everything and I love hunting here!
Tip: They curate some of the newer and designer items in a section called “Pick of the Litter” if you don’t like to dig.
What I’ve found: I found a Kate Spade winter coat for my daughter and a St. John sweater for me!
Style Encore
Style Encore carefully curates like-new items that are current styles for women (and coming soon, men’s items). It’s a great place to find designer items for half the price or less. It’s a staple if you’re looking to boost your style without breaking your budget.
Tip: Style Encore also has clearance sales that you can watch for.
What I’ve found: I have found some rarer handbags here, along with many of my favorite go-to style items.
Just Between Friends Des Moines
This is by far my TOP spot to buy AND sell kid’s clothing. I love buying here because I’m supporting other moms like me. The sale is twice a year and worth clearing your calendar for.
Tip: Most items go half off on Sunday. You can load up A LOT for very little.
What I’ve found: Designer shoes for both of my kids. Christmas presents that were on my kids’ lists!
