The Thing about Teens and Tweens (in Pictures and Quotes)

1

It shocks me sometimes that I have old kids. I have a small one, too, still, and that keeps me from not sobbing outright at school events and award ceremonies or when I drop off lunch money and things like that. It hasn’t all slipped away yet. Anyway, time flies. We know this. But you know what? Sometimes teens and tweens are downright funny and insightful. And they are wicked fun to hang out with. That is, between the crazy outbursts resulting in this:

Know what that is?

It’s a door handle-shaped hole in my drywall. And I swore up and down when I was a teenager that when I became a parent I’d NEVER say all that crap my parents said to me about taking the door off its hinges….

We saw a teenager who looked like Justin Bieber working for a painting company for the summer. I said, “Hey, L — that painter guy looks like Bieber.”

L: “He looks like an idiot.”

Me: “Bieber is an idiot.”

L, thoughtfully: “It’s too bad that Bieber had to become a singer.”

Me: “As opposed to what? What else do you think Bieber should have become, L? What calling has he missed?”

Silence… then giggles.

L: “Is Bieber like the grown-up guys who ride tiny bikes that you told me I can’t marry?”

#3:

“Mom? Roadkill is just so sad. We should move the streets.”

There is so much laundry. All it took to get them to help is bribery.

#6:

“You know, everyone is always telling me to stay a kid and just be a kid, but then everyone tells me to think about my future and plan for my future and try harder for my future. It’s confusing. Am I supposed to grow up or not?”

I’d say not.

  1. I love this! Quotes are my most favorite way to remember my kids at different ages, almost even more than pictures. It’s amazing how our tiny little babies so quickly become big people, with ideas and thoughts and humor and naughtiness and grace.
