The number of children waiting for families is great. Amy Skogerson and Andrea McGinn love helping families with adoption.

November is National Adoption Month. According to Child Welfare, the purpose of the month is to increase national awareness of the need for permanent families for children and youth in the U.S. foster care system.

What are the different types of adoption?

The Law Shop handles a lot of adoptions through DHS which is when kids who are in foster care are adopted. Another type of adoption is when a family member or step-parent adopts a child. The Law Shop is bringing on a new attorney who has experience with private adoptions so they will begin offering that service as well. Private adoptions typically occur through an adoption agency and also include international adoptions.

Where can you find more information about adoption?

If you are interested in learning more about adopting, there are a number of resources available. Four Oaks Foster and Adoptive Family Services is a good place to start. Amy also encourages you to talk to other adoptive parents. You can learn more about becoming a foster parent and possibly adopting a child that way from the Iowa Department of Human Services

I have referred Amy to literally every person I know who is adopting (I think I’m at 3 and running!) and there is a reason for that! Amy truly makes us feel like she cares about helping our family grow, and the best part is that I know it isn’t an act – it is clear that she loves what she does and helping children find their forever families!
