The energy at a road race can leave you feeling empowered to take on anything the world throws your way. And it’s always fun to show off medals to the kids: “See kids, Mom is strong and determined.”
Des Moines is a great place to train and race. There are many road races around the city all summer long and into the fall. With distances ranging from 1 mile and 5k (3.1 miles) to the more ambitious 10K (6.2 miles), 10 miles, half marathon (13.1 miles), or even a full marathon (26.2 miles). Many races are family-friendly, offering short kid runs, making them a great way to introduce your kids to running.

Here’s a list of road races in and around Des Moines this summer and fall.
What to Know: You can walk, run, jump, swim, ride, lift, play a sport, go to the gym, and more!
What to Know: After running 5K or 10K, don’t miss the post-race party including the famous stein holding contest!
What to Know: Run over the scenic High Trestle Trail during the 10K. Bikers can opt for a duathlon that includes 4 miles of running and a 13-mile bike ride.
What to know: This family-friendly race has a 5K, 10K, or 1-mile route. The majority of the race takes place on the Clive Greenbelt Trail.
August 7 | Summer Breeze Battle of the Burbs
Where: NCMIC 14001 University Ave, Clive
When: 9 a.m.
Cost: Register here. Kids Fun Run is free; 5K and 10K starting at $25
What to Know: Walk or run the 5K through the beautiful Clive Country Club neighborhood challenge yourself to a 10K.
What to know: The race takes place on the scenic brick streets in Adel. Strollers and wheelchairs are permitted. Transportation will be provided from the ADM High School to the square starting 6:30 a.m.
What to know: Kids are welcome to participate in this family-friendly race, which starts and ends at Des Moines University.
What to know: Whether you are looking to run, walk or just enjoy the wine this race is a sure thing for a great time and an incredible experience! All participants receive a finisher medal and a glass of wine(or soda if under 21!).
What to know: Don your commemorative run cape and get ready to walk, run & FLY at the Des Moines Superhero Heart Run! Join forces with Heart Heroes & Help-a-Heart for the 8th annual 5k/2k run aimed at raising awareness & funds for Congenital Heart Disease.
What to know: Not up for a full or half marathon? Opt for the MercyOne 5-mile run or 1-mile walk on October 16. If you’re feeling adventurous, make it a combo and run the 5-mile run on Saturday and another race on Sunday. Enjoy live music and entertainment on Court Avenue following the race.
November 14 | Capital Pursuit (10 Mile, 5K)
Where: Locust & 15th Street, Des Moines
When: 8 a.m.
What to know: Capital Pursuit is a great early fall race that takes participants through the vibrant streets of downtown Des Moines, down the tree-lined streets near Drake University campus, and ending at Western Gateway Park.
