Whether you practice yoga regularly or are wanting to try it out, from late spring to early fall you can take an outdoor yoga class. Be amongst the trees while in tree pose!

There are a variety of outdoor yoga classes across the Des Moines metro (most of them are free!). Enjoy the fresh air and get in touch with your mind, body, and spirit.

Grab your mat and some water and center yourself in nature.

Recurring Outdoor Yoga

Des Moines Yoga in the Park

Where: Gray’s Lake Des Moines

When: Saturdays June 4 to September 24; 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Hosted by: Des Moines Parks and Recreation and UnityPoint Health-Des Moines

Cost: Free

What to know: The classes, taught by volunteer instructors from around the Des Moines metro, are open for all skill levels, from the curious beginner to advanced yogi. Bring a mat or a towel (and some water!) and wear clothes you can move in. No registration is required.

Yoga on Cowles Commons 

Where: 221 Walnut St, Des Moines

When: June 4; July 2; August 6; 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Hosted by: Des Moines Performing Arts

Cost: Free

What to know: Nourish your body, mind, and spirit surrounded by 12,000 perennials and the bustle of Downtown Des Moines.

Ankeny Yoga in the Park

Where: Wagner Park, Ankeny

When: Saturdays Memorial Day through Labor Day; 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Hosted by: City of Ankeny and UnityPoint Health-Des Moines

Cost: Free

What to know: Yoga in the Park is taught by volunteer instructors from various areas in the studios. It’s designed for improving community health, energy, and relaxation. Families and all levels are welcome. Don’t forget your mat!

Clive Outdoor Yoga

Where: Greenbelt Landing near Clive Aquatic Center (1801 NW 114th St.)

When: Wednesdays June 1 to August 10; 6 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.

Hosted by: Clive Parks & Rec

Cost: Free but registration is required.

What to know: Bring a mat or towel and a water bottle. 

Yoga on the Lawn

Where: North lawn of West Des Moines City Hall, 4200 Mills Civic Parkway, West Des Moines

When: Sundays June 4 to August 28; 9 a.m. 

Hosted by: West Des Moines Parks and Recreation

Cost: Free

What to know: This free program is open to the community and all yoga abilities. Each week, a volunteer from a local studio will lead the group in a Sunday morning stretch. Ages six and older are welcome. Please bring a water bottle and yoga mat.

Indianola Yoga in the Park

Where: Buxton Park, Indianola

When: Saturdays June 3 to September 26; 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. 

Hosted by: Indianola Parks and Recreation

Cost: Free

What to know: Relax and invigorate as volunteer instructors lead you through exercises in the park. Improve flexibility, balance, and strength in a unique setting. All you need is your own mat, towel, and water bottle.

Granger Yoga in the Park

Where: Centennial Park, Granger

When: Saturdays, June 3 to August 21, 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Hosted by: Granger Parks and Recreation

What to know: You are encouraged to bring a mat or a towel as well as some water and clothes you can move in. No registration for the class is required, just show up ready to relax, release and enjoy.

Waukee Yoga in the Park

Where: Winfield Park, Waukee

When: Every other Saturday, June 10 to September 23, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

What to know: $2 per person. Participants 8 years and older are encouraged to bring a yoga mat or towel and water bottle.
