Nothing Is Unfigureoutable

mom holding child. nothing is unfigureoutable. Des Moines MomI have a very wise friend who is always giving me great advice. Especially when it comes to parenting. The other day we were talking about fears and how we try to help our children overcome their fears.

She told me her son was worried about being in a play at church. She asked him what was the absolute worse thing that could happen. And he said he would stand in front of the audience and forget all of his lines and people would laugh. To which my friend said if that happened she would still love him and they would figure it out.

Because nothing is unfigureoutable.

No, that isn’t a word, but yes it is a mantra.

My family and I recently moved to Iowa from California. My husband and I were nervous because it was a big move. But we always kept saying, if things don’t work out we can always move back. It may not look like it did, we will have to find other jobs and a different place to live, but this one decision isn’t the last decision we could ever make.

As I’ve gotten older, and hopefully wiser, I’ve realized I want my children to understand that nothing in life is unfigureaboutable. This doesn’t mean there aren’t consequences to our actions. And sometimes those consequences aren’t fun. BUT they can always be figured out.

I don’t want my children to feel like they can’t make mistakes.

I don’t want my children to let failure paralyze them.

I don’t want my children to feel like they can’t tell me anything.

I want my children to understand that even if they mess up big time, we can always figure it out and figure it out together. Because no matter what they do I will always love them.

So how do I instill this notion into them? Well, that’s an ongoing process for sure!

I constantly remind them that I love them. When they get into trouble and are punished we talk through it. We talk about the actions and the consequences. We talk about worse-case scenarios a lot – it’s a GREAT dinner topic! And in the end, I am always reminding them that not only can they figure things out, but we can figure them out.

Nothing is unfigureoutable if you try.
