Why You Won’t Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions


New Years resolutionsIf you’re like most, you make your New Year’s resolutions with the best of intentions…to keep them! Whether you want to read more, lose weight, workout more, or start a hobby we all begin the New Year determined and ready to tackle our resolutions.

But unfortunately, 80% of Americans who make New Year’s Resolutions fail by February and only 8% actually keep them for the whole year.

I know, not really what you want to read as we head into the New Year full of hope and ready for change. But I’m here to give you solutions so you can be part of the 8% and maybe even raise that number a little!

2 reasons why you don’t keep your resolutions and how to change

You’re not specific enough.

It’s one thing to say, “I’m going to focus on my health” or “I want to lose weight” but how will you do that? What are your specific goals/habits that will help you do that? 

If your goal is to work out more but you don’t have a specific goal or plan to do that…it’s likely it won’t actually happen. Instead, get specific and say, “I’m going to work out 3 days a week: two days will be at the gym before work doing cardio and one day will be after work doing a body pump class.”

See how specific that is? This will make it so much easier to follow through.

Go one step further and schedule your habits/goals in your calendar. This works really great if your habit is workout related!

You change too much too fast

So often we make grand resolutions to workout every day, eat zero carbs or x amount of calories a day, oh, and, never touch sugar again. Besides being a bit extreme we also are trying to change too much too fast. We get overwhelmed and instead of pausing for a moment and creating some habits that are actually sustainable we just quit. Leading us right back to where we started…for the umpteenth time. 

Instead, choose one to two (specific) habits to focus on. When those are consistent…add in another habit. Slow is the way to go when you want to make lasting sustainable changes.

Make 2020 the year you stick to your resolutions! No matter what resolutions you choose this year, remember to be very specific and start with one to two habits to focus on.
