My Kid Wears Glasses

Kid wears glasses des moines mom blog My youngest son officially wears glasses now. I have a little of bit of mom-guilt over missing the fact that without them, he couldn’t see across the room or anything at a distance. I don’t wear glasses and never had any vision problems so this was completely new territory for me.

We were sitting in a patient waiting area a few months ago and I mentioned something that I was reading on the television across the room. He looked at me with surprise and said he didn’t know there were any words on the screen. I quizzed him over various words around the room on the walls and realized he couldn’t see any of them. Not a single one!

The Eye Exam

We decided to make an appointment right away. The doctor was wonderful with us, and the visit went very well (except the eye drop part which my son said burned a lot).

After the doctor did the exam and tests, he held up a lens for me to look through. He said this is how bad your son’s vision is. I nearly started crying right then and there! I felt horrible I didn’t know my son’s vision was so poor.

Picking Out the Glasses

This was the part I was dreading the most. We don’t have vision insurance and I was worried the glasses were going to cost a lot. I asked the assistant who was helping us to point us in the direction of the most “affordable” section and to my surprise, they had a lot of options that included both the frames and lenses for much less than I was planning on spending!

My son spent the next 20 minutes trying on every single pair and narrowing it down to his favorite. They are blue and match his hockey team colors.

Picking Up the Glasses

I never want to forget that day! After the assistant spent a lot of time getting his glasses fit perfectly to his face, we were ready to leave. I guess it never occurred to me that when he stepped outside the office, his world would be drastically different.

Here are some of my favorite comments he said:
  • I didn’t know trees had different color leaves.
  • I feel so much taller.
  • I didn’t know the TV in dad’s adjusting area had words.
  • Can I go to the grocery store with you? I want to see all of the signs.
  • (At the grocery store) Mom! Look at all the colors of Halloween candy in that display!
  • I didn’t know people could read house numbers from the street.
  • I didn’t know the semi trucks had words on them.
  • All of the colors are so bright.
  • I see so many white spots. (Flowers in a field)
Plus he read alllll of the signs out the window. Every commercial real estate sign. Every gas price.

His glasses went up and down as he was checking things out…and laughing a lot!
Perhaps the best moment was walking out of the eye doctor and as he started telling me how clear everything was, he stopped talking. I asked what he was seeing. He said, “nothing right now because I am tearing up.”

Everyday Life

Now that his glasses are a part of his everyday life, we make sure they are being cared for correctly. “On your face or in the case” is our mantra to keep them protected. He loves wearing them because he can see everything so much better.
