My youngest son officially wears glasses now. I have a little of bit of mom-guilt over missing the fact that without them, he couldn’t see across the room or anything at a distance. I don’t wear glasses and never had any vision problems so this was completely new territory for me.
We were sitting in a patient waiting area a few months ago and I mentioned something that I was reading on the television across the room. He looked at me with surprise and said he didn’t know there were any words on the screen. I quizzed him over various words around the room on the walls and realized he couldn’t see any of them. Not a single one!
The Eye Exam
We decided to make an appointment right away. The doctor was wonderful with us, and the visit went very well (except the eye drop part which my son said burned a lot).
After the doctor did the exam and tests, he held up a lens for me to look through. He said this is how bad your son’s vision is. I nearly started crying right then and there! I felt horrible I didn’t know my son’s vision was so poor.
Picking Out the Glasses
This was the part I was dreading the most. We don’t have vision insurance and I was worried the glasses were going to cost a lot. I asked the assistant who was helping us to point us in the direction of the most “affordable” section and to my surprise, they had a lot of options that included both the frames and lenses for much less than I was planning on spending!
My son spent the next 20 minutes trying on every single pair and narrowing it down to his favorite. They are blue and match his hockey team colors.
Picking Up the Glasses

- I didn’t know the TV in dad’s adjusting area had words.
- Can I go to the grocery store with you? I want to see all of the signs.
- (At the grocery store) Mom! Look at all the colors of Halloween candy in that display!
- I didn’t know people could read house numbers from the street.
- I didn’t know the semi trucks had words on them.
- All of the colors are so bright.
- I see so many white spots. (Flowers in a field)
