Any mom knows true happiness only comes from finding the perfect swimsuit. Here’s a quick guide to help you find it.

First, you need to assess if you really need a new swimsuit. Here are some questions to ask yourself:

  • Is my suit over five years old?
  • Are there any visible holes or “worn out” spots?
  • Has the color faded more than 50%?
  • Is my swimsuit too big or too small?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you *may need a new suit.

*Many times you can stretch out your current suit another five years, if necessary.

Once you’ve decided that it is indeed time for a new suit, decide which type of suit would fit your needs:

BIKINI: Great for moms who either have the perfect mom-bod or who just don’t care what anyone else thinks. Here are some things to consider with this type of suit:

  • Are you confident enough to wear this in front of other judge-y moms at the pool?
  • Is your child okay with being seen with you in your “underwear suit”?
  • Is it made to withstand a possible wardrobe malfunction caused by a child and/or water activity you have to participate in because of your child?

TANKINI: Great for moms who like full coverage but also like using the restroom without stripping down naked. Here are some things to consider with this type of suit:

  • Do you enjoy constantly pulling your top down and/or pushing “things” back into their proper place?
  • Would you feel happy if a small family could comfortably camp beneath the top portion of your swimsuit?
  • Is it made to withstand a possible wardrobe malfunction caused by a child and/or water activity you have to participate in because of your child?

ONE-PIECE: Great for moms who love to shimmy into sausage casings. Here are some things to consider with this type of suit:

  • Do you like full coverage and have a bladder that other moms envy?
  • Are Spanx your happy place or do you love the feeling of being swaddled tightly in a blanket?
  • Is it made to withstand a possible wardrobe malfunction caused by a child and/or water activity you have to participate in because of your child?

Take a hard look at the questions you answered yes to. Spend several hours contemplating what exactly it is you are looking for, dream about how your new swimming suit will magically take away any and all of your body image insecurities, and then…

…just grab the first “cute” suit you see at Target without even trying it on. You came with the kids and they are done, just done, and you need to get out of the store before someone loses it.

Good luck swimsuit shopping, Mommas!

Jennifer is a single mom of two boys. She does her best to get to places on time, despite being a chronically late person and the fact that neither she or her boys are morning people. She recently went back into the classroom after staying home for nine years to raise her kids, and she credits her sanity and success at this endeavor to the fact that she has incredibly supportive parents, family, and friends. She also has a network of single moms that truly “get it” and who encourage her on a daily basis. When she’s not hanging out with her kiddos, Jennifer enjoys writing at a coffee shop, trying new restaurants, or catching up with friends.
