Making Christmas Traditions For Your Family

1

Christmas to me is all about celebrating the birth of Jesus, spending time with family and friends and traditions.  As a child, I  loved holiday traditions. I always looked forward to Thanksgiving afternoon when we would make countless trips up the basement stairs with our hands full of Christmas decorations to kick off the Christmas season. As I have grown, traditions are even more important to me as I hang on to the ones from my childhood while making new ones with my husband and 2 little boys. Today I thought I would share with you some of my family’s favorite Christmas traditions.

Advent Calendar

This year I really wanted to do  a meaningful advent calendar for our family. After thinking it over for a while I came up with the idea of putting a little piece of paper in each numbered pocket. Each piece of paper has an instruction on it. Many of the instructions are geared towards some sort of Christmas activity and some of the pieces of  paper have instructions to go get a piece of candy from Momma. So far we have watched a Christmas movie, drove around Jolly Holiday Lights, drank hot chocolate, visited Santa and put up Christmas window clings. I already know after what a smashing success the advent calendar has been this year that this will be a tradition in our family for many years to come!

Christmas Eve

One of the best things about traditions is carrying them over from one generation to the next. Christmas Eves spent with my family are some of my most treasured memories. Every year we would get all dressed up and head down the street to Christmas Eve service at our church. After the service was over we would come home and change into our pajamas and stuff ourselves silly with all sorts of yummy snacks, appetizers and desserts. Then the whole family would gather around the Christmas tree and open presents. It was such a wonderful evening full of love, laughter, faith and family. I am so excited to do the exact same thing with my own little family this year and hope my boys grow up with the same magical memories of Christmas Eve that I had as a child.

A Birthday Cake for Jesus

This is a tradition we started a few years back and is now a favorite of ours! Every Christmas Eve we make a birthday cake for Jesus.  I let Drake pick out what kind of cake and frosting (it usually involves sprinkles of some sort) to use and we mix it up and bake it together. Before we eat it we sing Happy Birthday to Jesus. I have found this to be such a fun and easy way to help kids make the correlation between Christmas and Jesus’s birthday.

Wishing you and your family warm Christmas

wishes full of blessings and joy!
