Kids across Iowa welcome the start of summer as a chance to spend more time playing in the house, in the yard, or at the pool. But for parents, longer days also mean more supervision and more risks. You may not know it, but preventable accidents are the number-one cause of death of children in the United States, and many of them occur in and around the home.

That said, kids will be kids, and they’re going to climb, grab, and chew their way through childhood. There are things we can do in and around the house to make sure their accidents aren’t life-threatening.

Make Safe Happen, a program from Nationwide, is setting out to help reduce preventable injuries by offering safety tips and tools through its website, MakeSafeHappen.com, mobile app, and National Safety Experience Tour, all of which can help parents and caregivers make their homes safer.

2A6A2910This weekend, you and your family can take part in the Make Safe Happen Safety Experience at the Des Moines Arts Festival on June 26-28, 2015. The Experience is guided by an interactive program on a tablet and a helpful eagle named Nate. You’ll be able to go from room to room in a simulated home and learn what to do if you or your children see a dangerous situation, such as an unsteady television, unsecured household chemicals, or a child playing around water without adult supervision.

It’ll be a fun and engaging way to get across an important message to kids. We hope to see you there!
