In Plain Sight: Human Trafficking Event March 7, 2015

0

Did you know that 12 to 14 is the average age for girls trafficked into prostitution in the Unites States?

We want the women (and men) in our city to be aware and educated on the issue of human trafficking. It’s happening on our interstates, in our grocery stores, neighborhoods, truck stops, and in that nice hotel down the street. We might think we live in a “small town” free of such tragedy, but we are naive if we think this isn’t happening around us.

Join us in creating awareness of the issue of human trafficking with this upcoming March 7, 2015, event at the Varsity Theatre.

The message of awareness, how to recognize, safely report or call in tips, get involved in local efforts to aid recovery and provide residential living for survivors/victims once rescued. The event will also feature key speakers from local human trafficking aid organizations on how people can get involved on a practical level and going forward. The event is a free will donation viewing of the documentary In Plain Sight

All proceeds will go to Dorothy’s House, a local residential girls’ home that is preparing to launch in the Des Moines area this spring. Dorothy’s House is the first of its kind in the area and has plans to expand as the need is great. More information will be shared about Dorothy’s House at the event, so be sure to attend to learn more about this important organization.

We hope you will make plans to attend and share this important topic with those you know and love. Consider all of us who are out in our communities on a day to day basis. We may see or notice something we initially could think is irrelevant… but reporting that tip to an anonymous line may mean rescue and freedom to another human being.
