‘Tis the season for all the extra goodies and we all have our favorites. I tend to crave puppy chow during the holiday season and this year is no different. I’ve already made this recipe multiple times and it just keeps getting better and better!
And if you’re like, Puppy Chow? What’s Puppy Chow? You may know it as Muddy Buddies. I’m so curious if Puppy Chow is a Midwest thing or not?!
No matter what you called it, we can agree that it’s yummy, right?!
I love making healthier versions of things to decrease the amount of sugar so I don’t feel so sugar-loaded and blah after indulging. My recipe is lower in sugar and actually calls for homemade powdered sugar that’s made from coconut sugar so it won’t spike your blood sugars so harshly.
This recipe is very similar to the classic Puppy Chow recipe but just a few tweaks to make it a bit healthier so you don’t feel like you’ve got a complete sugar rush. All you need for this healthified puppy chow are a few key ingredients:
Gluten-Free Baking Flour
I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I do! In fact, I’m making it today. It will sure to be a hit for a holiday party or for a movie night treat. I’d love to know if you try it and what you think!
For the Powdered Sugar:
1 cup coconut sugar
Add coconut sugar and flour to a high-speed blender and blend for 30-45 seconds until it becomes a light, powder consistency. Let sit for 1-2 minutes to settle before taking the lid off.
For the Puppy Chow:
8 cups Chex cereal
1 cup chocolate chips
½ cup peanut butter, no sugar or oil added
¼ cup coconut oil, melted
1 homemade powdered sugar recipe, see above
In a large bowl, add the cereal and set aside.
In a medium glass bowl, add the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and coconut oil. Microwave for 30-60 seconds, stir, and microwave for another 30 seconds or until smooth and well blended.
Pour the chocolate mixture over the cereal and stir until the cereal is evenly coated. Add cereal mixture to a brown paper bag (or 2-gallon zip lock bag).
Add powdered sugar and shake until the cereal is evenly coated.
Spread mixture onto waxed or parchment paper to cool and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
