Advice for Parents for Back to School Technology

advice for parents for tech

As our children head back to the classroom, many will be carrying more than books, paper and pens in their backpacks. Students of all ages also will be toting the latest tech tools to help them stay connected to their parents as well as the world around them.

When used with proper supervision, smartphones and tablets can revolutionize classrooms — opening doors to many new learning opportunities.

Powered by Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network, devices like the

Ellipsis 8 tablet or the HTC One M9 smartphone, allows students to:

  • Check facts within seconds
  • Read the news
  • Access a dictionary, thesaurus and other reference guides
  • Locate points on a map
  • Perform all the operations of a scientific calculator

According to the Pew Research Center, nearly three quarters of today’s teens have or have access to a smartphone. But many parents still struggle when it comes to determining the appropriate age at which they should give their children a mobile device.

No matter the age, parents should set good examples, encourage responsible use and set limits. Security tips include:

  • Set a passcode so personal information, texts, emails and photos are safe
  • Do not download unfamiliar apps or open texts or emails from unknown senders
  • Use “find my phone” tools, so the device can be located if lost
  • Use public Wi-Fi wisely so that others cannot access personal data
  • Talk to your kids about what sites they use and what content they are sharing

For an extra layer security, parents should consider taking advantage of Verizon FamilyBase – a service to monitor activity and set usage limits and restrictions. You can also use FamilyBase to avoid unexpected overage charges.

And finally, to ensure connectivity, parents might want to consider a Mophie Powerstation Plus 8X or a Motorola Power Pack for quick, on-the go charging so busy children will never be out of touch.
