My girls and I visited Stitch in the East Village last month, and when we walked in it was like we entered a fairy tale. I literally could have stayed there all day long… and I don’t even sew!! It is the cutest store. You all must check it out. The owners, Tami and Jess, are super sweet and cute!! They have a passion for what they do and they are so excited to share it with our readers!

What is Stitch?

Stitch is a modern and eclectic sewing, knitting, and needle craft shop located in the heart of Des Moines’ historic shopping district, the East Village. The owners, Tami and Jess, found that they were traveling all over the midwest and country to reach beyond the typical box store offerings. So they thought when first planning to open the shop that they couldn’t possibly be the only people leaving town to find inspiration and beautiful craft supplies. They have a large workspace in the back of the shop for classes and private lessons, and a cozy place for knitters and sewists to learn news skills, connect with other crafters, and enjoy the art of “making.”

From the Owners

I asked the owners, Jess and Tami, what they would like our readers to know about their store and about themselves. Here is what they had to say.

Stitch is an urban craft room offering beautiful yarns, modern fabrics, and a blend of needle craft supplies. We are inspired by our own mothers’ and grandmothers’ needle craft traditions. Like our grandmothers, we hope to re-create a community of stitchers, old and new, to work alongside one another. Hence, our shop is three-fold: first, we offer materials for today’s DIY artist; second, we have a range of classes to engage and inspire those who want to grow in these needle crafts; and finally, we want to be a welcome home to stitchers, experienced or brand new, who find joy in creating something handmade. We hope that when you walk into our shop you feel like you never want to leave.

Stitch offers sewing, knitting, crochet, and quilting classes available for the beginner and for those who want to take their skills to the next level. To sign up for classes, please feel free to stop in anytime to reserve your spot and select your materials. Some classes have limited availability. The best way to stay up to date on the class list is to join the newsletter and follow Stitch on Facebook. Here is a printable of their spring class schedule.

Many classes will be repeated throughout the year, and private lessons are available for individuals and groups.
