Favorite Local Places for a Cup of Coffee

coffeeThis winter has been never-ending, right?! A good cup of coffee can make any bitter cold day better. I asked around, and here are a few favorite local places to get a great cup of coffee. So get out there, take a friend or a hot date, and grab a cup of locally-brewed coffee!

I have linked their websites to their names, so click on the names for more information. Don’t forget to “like” their Facebook pages – many of the stores post daily specials and deals there!

Smokey Row

This has to be my favorite local coffee place so far. I used to work in the Sherman Hill neighborhood, and there was a sign in the window FOREVER that a coffee shop was coming. Well, it was probably a good thing they didn’t move in until after I resigned. There is such a fun atmosphere here. When I went with a group of friends I felt like a college kid again. We stayed out way past our mommy bedtimes, and there were lots of Drake students hanging around to make us feel young! They have great desserts, meals, and of course, coffee! They are located right off I-235 and Martin Luther King Parkway. Find them on Facebook here.

La Mie

A fellow DMMB contributor told me La Mie served her the best mocha she has ever had. I haven’t had their coffee, but I have been there for breakfast on a Saturday morning, and it is the place to be. Amazing food and great atmosphere (you won’t feel like you are in Iowa). They are located in the shops at Roosevelt. Find them on Facebook here.

Zanzibar’s

It has been a few years since I’ve been here. Zanzibar’s is located on Ingersoll near downtown. According to their Facebook page, they even have gluten free treats! Their Facebook page also lists what they are roasting fresh that day.

Mar’s Cafe

Located near Drake, this local coffee spot was recommended to me by a friend. I drove by this spot many times when I worked in the area and wondered if it was any good. I think I will put it on my list to try! Find them on Facebook here.

Friedrich’s

Locally owned, and they roast their own beans. There are several locations in the metro (West Des Moines, Urbandale, Des Moines, and downtown Des Moines). Check out their website for specific locations. For those of you who are dairy-free, you can request almond milk for your drink!

Green Grounds Cafe

As the name implies, this local spot doesn’t just serve great coffee – they do it with the environment in mind. They serve only fair trade coffee and several kinds of organic coffees. They love using local products and serve locally-roasted Friedrich’s coffee. They are located in the Historic Valley Junction. Find them on Facebook here.

Java Joe’s

Fresh-roasted coffee daily, located downtown. What could be better than that?! Find them on Facebook here.

Scooter’s

This company started in Omaha and recently announced expansion into Des Moines. There is already a location on Merle Hay and two more Des Moines locations planned. Find them on Facebook here.

The Village Bean Co.

They are located in the East Village. According to their Facebook page, they use Ghirardelli Chocolate in their mochas, white mochas, and lattes. I also found on their Facebook page that they started using almond milk, as well, if you want your drink dairy-free!

Grounds for Celebration

Another great local coffee shop for a freshly roasted cup of coffee. Grab a dish of gelato while you’re sipping your coffee. A friend told me this is the place to get the best valued drinks in the metro. Find them on Facebook here.

Rich’s Brew

A fellow DMMB contributor said this is her favorite place to get a cup of coffee in Johnston!

Maplenol Cafe – Valley Community Center

Got kiddos? Need a coffee and a place to let the kids run? Then this is the place to be. There is a coffee shop for mom and a play area for the kiddos. Oh, get this – it is free for the kiddos to play. Put this on your list of places to check out!

What is your favorite local place to get a cup of coffee? I know there are more places out there….
