Ending the Silence and Talking about Mental Health with NAMI Iowa

ending the silenceDes Moines Mom wants to create a safe space for ongoing conversations about mental health. That is why we created this series: Mental Health and Motherhood.

In this monthly series, we’re going to be talking about mental health for ourselves, for our kids, our spouses, and our families. We could talk about the importance of mental health for days. Some topics we want to dig into are anxiety and depression, bullying, postpartum depression, and therapy in general.

NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. NAMI’s dedicated volunteer members and leaders work tirelessly to raise awareness and provide essential education, advocacy, and support group programs for people in their community living with mental illness and their loved ones.

According to the 2021 Mental Health in America Report, even before COVID-19, 19 percent of adults experienced a mental illness, and this number increased by 1.5 million in the last year.

Youth mental health concerns are on the rise. NAMI is committed to providing free resources and services to community members to raise awareness about mental health and start conversations.

Ending the Silence Program

Ending the Silence is a free, 50-minute presentation designed to give audience
members an opportunity to learn about mental illness through personal stories, an
informative PowerPoint, and short videos. Each presentation outlines symptoms of mental health conditions, suicide prevention, and gives attendees ideas about how to help themselves, friends, or family members who may need support.
