Des Moines Moms Blog regularly highlights local nonprofits. There are so many amazing organizations in our city dedicated to looking out for the well being of all who live here. We want to feature them and share ways you and your family can partner with them through volunteering, giving donations, and attending amazing fundraising events. If you know of a nonprofit we should feature, please email [email protected].

Animal Lifeline of Iowa

Animal Lifeline of Iowa (ALI) is Central Iowa’s only special needs, no-kill animal shelter. It is celebrating nearly 35 years of serving the Des Moines area and all of Iowa. ALI rescues cats and dogs that are injured, handicapped, have a serious medical condition, abused, pregnant and nursing moms, or orphans that require bottle feeding. Animals, who run a higher risk of euthanasia in a traditional shelter setting, are rehabilitated and then adopted into loving forever homes. Animals are not euthanized because they have been at the shelter for a certain length of time.

Stacie Leinen, ALI’s Director of Development, says “Just because animals come to ALI with a special need, does not mean that special need is always forever. For example, pregnant moms arrive, have their babies in a safe environment, all are spayed/neutered and placed up for adoption. An injured animal receives the medical care required and once healed is placed up for adoption.”

ALI operates a thrift shop on the southside of Des Moines. The shop accepts gently used household goods, clothing and more. Proceeds support the work the Shelter does saving special needs animals. Follow the Animal Lifeline Thrift Shop on Facebook for sneak peeks on merchandise.

Mission Statement

Animal Lifeline is a no-kill animal shelter seeking to reduce the number of special needs dogs and cats that are euthanized by providing care, temporary shelter, and by promoting positive long-term pet guardianship.
