Bowen’s Surgery

2
You can really see his cyst well in this photo.

Last week, on Monday, I took my handsome little man in for a scheduled surgery.  He was born with a Dermoid cyst above his right eye.  (Beware: IF you google dermoid cyst you may embark upon some nasty photos!)  We knew we would have the surgery around the time he was two and I prepared myself for a sob fest when the day actually came….but truthfully it went AMAZINGLY!

I had envisioned Bowen grasping me frantically as a nurse pulled him away from me to go back for anesthesia.  It went nothing like that.  We were contained in a small room and my busy boy wanted out!  So, when Miss sweet-smiley-nurse came to take him back…he was elated.  NO more claustrophobic waiting room.  Plus, he really enjoyed charming all the nurses at the nurses’ station on the way back to surgery.  Jon and I both were relieved that he left us in good spirits with no tears!

We then went back to the waiting room and we did just that.  Waited.  It wasn’t horrible.  Jon distracted me with some conversation and I may have checked Facebook nervously for the entire hour…but mostly, I felt peaceful.  I had prayed that God would protect my thoughts and I knew ultimately he was in control of Bowen’s surgery.  I felt the prayers of others too.  All the bad things I had envisioned about surgery were NOT coming true…I was feeling really blessed!

After about an hour, a nice woman told us the doctor was ready to see us.  She was smiling and happy so I figured all was well.  The doctor informed us that his surgery went beautifully!  YAY…complete relief!  Here comes the part when you will think, “Katie is a complete weirdo.”  But alas, I must share anyway.  I asked the doctor what the cyst looked like.  His response, “Would you like to see it?”  UMMMMM yes…And no need to ask me twice.  He went into a whole biology lesson while his assistant grabbed the specimen.  (His biology lesson was WAAAAY better than those boring bio101 lectures I heard in college…maybe they should bring out blood and guts to freshman in college to get them to pay attention?!)  I won’t get too descriptive on you…but basically it looked like a large grape with the skin peeled off.  Maybe a little more disgusting than that but you get my drift.  I left thinking…”Why am I not a surgeon?” Or at least a surgery nurse!  Oh the cool things they must get to do!

Back to my boy…we went back to the waiting room and waited for Bo to wake up from anesthesia.  I was a little antsy at this point…I just wanted my baby in my arms.

Cuddling after surgery.

Finally, they called us back.  I was expecting tears and cries for milk but I was handed a very groggy baby who just wanted to cuddle.  We did just that…I cuddled him up and he slept peacefully on me.  Soon, we were free to leave with our babe.

He did wonderfully!  He slept until about 2:30 (surgery was at 8:30)!  When he finally woke up, he sat up in his crib, pointed to his eye and said, “owie!”  It didn’t take long before my crazy boy was back to himself…running around like a wild man! Yes…all my crazy fears were put to rest.  He did wonderfully!  We are feeling blessed and Bowen is super excited to make up wild stories of how he got his super cool scar!

  1. So glad it went well! What a brave little guy he must have been. I would have wanted to see the “specimen,” too, by the way. 🙂 Also, if you’re wanting help with minimizing the scarring, talk to Sarah F. about essential oils. I’m using a few different ones on Isabel’s chin. I’m also using this stuff called Miracle Oil (all natural) that someone on Facebook told me about. It seems to be working quite well!
