What sets the Blank Children’s Hospital NICU apart?

The NICU has grown and changed tremendously over 50 years. In 2000 it was the first NICU in the country to have a unit with individual patient rooms. This offers family a quieter environment and more opportunities to bond with baby. They have plans for continued growth and optimization.

What kind of patient is seen in the NICU?

The NICU supports babies born prematurely (23 weeks and older) all the way up to full term. In the near future they will expand to offer services for babies born as early as 22 weeks.

Who works in the NICU?

Blank has a multidisciplinary team of neonatologists, practitioners, residents, child life specialists, nutritionists, and nursing team. Some of the nurses have been there for 45 years and provide a wealth of experience. Most nurses love the department so much they spend their whole career there.

What advice or encouragement do you have for a mom whose baby is in the NICU?

Most of the time when moms have a complications that results in a baby spending time in the NICU typically it is because of something out of a parent’s control. It is important for moms to maintain regular checkups with their OB during pregnancy, have a healthy diet, and always talk to their provider if they have questions or concerns.
