Bergman AcademyBergman Academy is an independent school with intentionally small class sizes (maximum of 16 learners per class). It is located in the heart of historic Greenwood Park at the former Science Center of Iowa.

A Bergman Academy education lasts far beyond eighth grade. It provides a foundation for life. Committed educators seek to prepare students not only for the world we know today but also for the world they will know and create tomorrow.

Bergman AcademyAt Bergman, Middle Scholars (6th-8th) are encouraged to develop and grow as leaders. Whether mentoring younger students, creating websites and apps, directing films, asking questions of guest speakers, writing poetry, participating in Model UN, or managing philanthropic projects, students are encouraged to utilize their own voices, and unique gifts, to make a difference.

Learning comes alive in classrooms through enriching project-based and experiential learning opportunities. Bergman’s small classes allow educators to get to know each learner individually, so no student feels like a number.  In this school community, who you are and how you learn matter.

Inspiring a Love of Learning

Bergman Academy students develop a genuine love of school. Whether learning Spanish through storytelling, creating sculptures in art, composing songs in GarageBand during music, coding in technology, or hiking the trails of Greenwood Park in PE, weekly Encore classes provide engaging opportunities for academic and personal growth.

In addition, Bergman Middle Scholars participate in numerous field trips and service-learning projects. The natural setting of Greenwood Park in Des Moines serves as an extension of Bergman Academy classrooms. Students enjoy the numerous hiking trails which surround the school as educators take full advantage of the incredible outdoor learning and recreational opportunities the park offers.

Bergman AcademyBergman graduate Bella explains,

Bergman Academy teaches us so much educationally, but just as many life lessons.  The teacher does not just give you an assignment and tell you to finish by a certain date, but helps you through the process and supports you. This school does not just offer learning experiences but opportunities to explore.”

Because of the strong relationships built between teachers and students, former alumni visit Bergman Academy often and tell stories of their achievement beyond Bergman. Whether running for student office, starting their own non-profit, or creating a new website, teachers are proud of the many ways students go on to impact their community.

A Dynamic Curriculum

Bergman Academy’s highly-trained teachers have a combined 300 years of teaching experience. They have the knowledge and resources necessary to implement a dynamic academic program that encourages critical thinking, creativity, achievement, and self-reflection.

Graduate Aleena explains,

The education at Bergman is my passport to the future and I am well prepared for it.”

Innovative lessons foster and build 21st-century skills in each child. One example of Bergman’s project-based curriculum is the storytelling, photo journaling, and movie-making unit that culminates in a presentation evening at the World Food Prize Hall of Laureates. In this intentionally unique learning environment, students develop confidence in their ability to speak, lead, and contribute positively to the world.

At Bergman Academy, educators value diversity and invite their students to become committed and curious global learners.
