At What Age Does It End?

At what age does it end?

The nights that are unending with a cluster feeding newborn and eyes so tired the world appears blurred. The grueling days of a teething toddler screaming at your legs.

At what age do they stop whining and complaining about every little thing you ask them to do?

The constant reminding to do simple tasks or finish their homework. Or the preteen back talk and attitude.

The desperation as parents to get them to eat a vegetable, or some meals begging them to even eat enough food in general to simply sustain themselves.

Then there’s the battles of getting them to wear clothes that match or fit, or some days even just to wear pants to preschool. And then to get to school on time when they’re older. Scrambling to get to practice after school, squeeze in homework, maybe a balanced dinner, and try to get them in bed on time to get enough sleep.

Or what age do they stop asking you to tuck them in at night, when you have just no more gas in the tank? When do they stop insisting for that one last hug before you head out the door to work?

At what age do you stop holding your newborn in a cradle position and instead hold them upright?

At what age exactly is the last time you pick your toddler up and carry them?

When does the magic of holidays wane, or the eager anticipation to celebrate birthdays?

When do they stop running to you when their best friend was mean, or when they experience their first heartbreak?

When will they stop asking for help preparing for their first job interview or college essay? Or caring for your opinion?

When do they stop asking how to do tasks like change the oil in their car, or tie a tie to go on their first date?

It all goes by so fast. In those moments where it feels too hard or the season of difficulty just won’t end, a little perspective is good for the heart. Raising children is not an easy task, and can feel downright grueling at some points.

When you are frustrated that your toddler just refuses to sleep, remember one day, you’ll be begging them to wake up. When they have a seemingly endless lineup of questions, remind yourself one day you’ll be desperate for a simple insight into their day. When they chase you around the house whining and begging to be held, there will likely be a day where they refuse to be hugged.

So don’t lose hope, mom. Raising children is one of the most rewarding and soul satisfying (and challenging) tasks we as humans can do. You’re doing a great job- hang in there!
