e all know Des Moines is a fabulous place to live, work, and raise a family. Whether you live in Des Moines or one of the surrounding suburbs, each area of town has its pros and cons. If you are looking to sell your starter house or get settled into your forever home, Century 21 real estate agent, Kyle Clarkson can help you with the process. We took to Facebook to answer readers most commonly asked questions about the housing market with Kyle Clarkson.

real estateI missed the spring/summer window to sell my house. Will I still be able to sell my house in the fall?

Absolutely! As people settle back into the routines of school schedules and life, fall is actually the second-best time (behind spring) to sell a home. Additionally, it really is a seller’s market right now in Des Moines. There is a very low volume of homes on the market, so now is the perfect time to list your house in a very competitive market. Combine that with low mortgage interest rates and you can almost guarantee that you will be able to sell your house.

What are some things I should consider before I list my home?

If you’ve lived in your home for a longer period of time, you will probably need to declutter and minimize. The typical person naturally starts to accumulate “stuff” so removing items becomes important. This gives the potential buyer the ability to visualize what it would look like for them to live there with their belongings.

One of the benefits of working with my team is that I partner with a home stager to get your home ready. This home stager will walk through every room of your house with you and tell you what things to consider removing, how to best arrange each room, or give you painting suggestions.

What home renovations will get me the best return on my investment?

Kitchens and bathrooms are what most HGTV type experts will tell you to spend your money. But the bigger questions are: how long are you planning on living in your current home and when you go to sell this home, is your goal to sell your home at top dollar or sell it quickly? You should also account for how much enjoyment and use you will get out of that home renovation. Your end goal should always be to enjoy your updated living space and make a little money on the remodel in the end.

Why should I use a realtor to sell my home versus trying to sell my home myself?

  • Availability. This is a real estate agent’s full-time job. If you aren’t available for a home showing, your house is not on the market and can’t get sold.
  • Knowledge. A real estate agent is in the business of knowing what a house is worth and what price you will be able to sell your house. A real estate agent knows the market and knows how to negotiate a price on your behalf.
  • Exposure. A real estate agent works within a network of other real estate professionals and is constantly showing your house to other real estate agents who are looking for homes for their clients.
